NINE BOARDS • ONE GAME
Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe — also called meta tic-tac-toe or super tic-tac-toe — is a paper-and-pencil strategy game that turns the 30-second classic into something you can actually think about. Instead of one 3 × 3 grid, you play on nine of them, arranged into a larger 3 × 3 meta-grid. The twist: the cell you pick inside a small board forces your opponent to play in the small board that lives at that same position on the meta-grid. That single rule changes everything. Suddenly every move has two consequences — what it does to the small board you're playing in, and which board you're sending your opponent to. Good players learn to set traps: win a small board while also sending the opponent into a square where all their options are bad. It's free, it takes a minute to learn, and it can keep a family busy for a whole road trip.
