How to play

Be the first to make one of the hands on the card, using exactly 14 tiles.

The tiles

Three suits numbered 1 to 9, four winds, three dragons, flowers and jokers. Tap any tile during a game to see its name.

The card

Each line is a hand. Colours show suits: groups in the same colour are the same suit, different colours are different suits. F is a flower, D a dragon (the one that goes with that colour’s suit), 0 is the Soap (white dragon), and N E W S are winds. X hands may be exposed; C hands must stay concealed until Mah Jongg. Tap Card at any time — the Closest tab shows the hands you’re nearest to.

The Charleston

Before play, everyone passes 3 tiles: right, across, then left. On that last pass you may pass some tiles “blind” — sending on tiles you’re receiving without looking. Then, if nobody stops it, a second Charleston goes left, across, right. Last comes an optional courtesy pass across of up to 3 tiles. Jokers can never be passed.

Taking turns

East (the dealer) starts with 14 tiles and discards first. Play moves to the right: draw a tile, then discard one. When someone discards a tile you need for a pung, kong or quint, you can call it — you’ll be asked. Show the group, then discard. You can only call for a pair or single when it gives you Mah Jongg.

Jokers

Jokers stand in for any tile in a group of 3 or more, never in a single or a pair. On your turn, if someone has exposed a joker standing in for a tile you hold, tap that joker to swap your tile for it. A discarded joker can’t be called.

Mah Jongg & scoring

When your 14 tiles match a hand, the Mah Jongg! button lights up. The player who threw your winning tile pays double the hand’s value and the others pay its value; win from the wall and everyone pays double. A hand with no jokers (except singles & pairs) counts double.

Type your card

One hand per line, the way it’s printed: the section, a colon, the tiles with their colours, then X or C and the points. Add like for “any like number”, run for consecutive numbers that can slide, or odd/even for a run that keeps to odds or evens. Your card stays on this device.

Add a hand

Type groups with spaces between them. 1–9 numbers, F flower, N E W S winds, D dragon, 0 Soap. End a number or dragon group with its colour from your card: g green, r red, b blue.
